Karl Brunnholzl

Dr. Karl Brunnhölzl, was born in Munich, Germany, and originally trained as a physician before becoming a Buddhist translator and teacher. He received his systematic training in Tibetan language and Buddhist philosophy and practice at the Marpa Institute for Translators in Kathmandu, founded by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche. Since 1989, he has been a translator and interpreter from Tibetan, English and Sanskrit. Since 1999, he is one of the principal translators and faculty at Nitartha Institute in Canada, Germany, and the US; and since 2005, one of the principal Western teachers of Nalandabodhi. Karl is a Tsadra Foundation grantee 2006–2008 and fellow from 2009-2016. Dr. Karl Brunnhölzl received the 2019 Khyentse Foundation Prize for Outstanding Translation for his translation of A Compendium of the Mahāyāna: Asaṅga’s Mahāyānasaṃgraha and Its Indian and Tibetan Commentaries, 3 volumes, published by Snow Lion in 2018.
